Der Kult-Anime - Die düstere Zukunftsvision aus dem Hause Production I.G gilt neben Akira als wichtigster Wegbereiter für den internationalen Durchbruch des Anime-Genres und als Klassiker. Ein Werk, an dem Freunde von intelligenten Sci-Fi-Filmen wie I, Robot, Matrix oder A.I. nicht vorbeikommen.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 2029. Fast alle Menschen haben ihren Körper durch künstliche Implantate verändert, um auf diese Weise bestimmte Fähigkeiten zu verbessern und sich neue anzueignen. Sogar das Gehirn lässt sich durch ein Cyberbrain ersetzen, das mit digitalen Daten gespeist werden kann. Verpackt in einer Biokapsel, der Shell, stecken in jedem Cyborg menschliche Gehirnzellen mit dem Geist (Ghost), der die Identität und Persönlichkeit enthält.

Umso bedrohlicher ist das Auftauchen eines unbekannten Hackers, genannt Puppet Master, der die Sicherheitsbarrieren der Shells zu überwinden vermag und auf diese Weise die Gehirne der Cyborgs mit falschen Informationen speisen kann. Seine Opfer verlieren ihren Willen und begehen Verbrechen für ihn und seine Auftraggeber, werden zu seinen Marionetten.

Um dies zu verhindern, wird die Sektion 9, eine Spezialeinheit des japanischen Innenministeriums, auf den Puppet Master angesetzt: Major Motoko Kusanagi, der ihr künstlicher Körper übermenschliche Kräfte verleiht und an ihrer Seite Batou.
