1926 - 2026 100 JAHRE

Das Kinojahr 1926 ist eines der erfolgreichsten und produktivsten der Stummfilmära.

Mehr als zweieinhalb Milliarden Amerikaner besuchen die Lichtspieltheater, das entspricht wöchentlichen Besucherzahlen von rund 50 Millionen.

Ähnlich in Großbritannien, wo die Menschen zwei bis drei Mal pro Woche die neu entstandenen „Picture Palaces“ frequentieren.

Auch in Deutschland gibt es einen beispiellosen Kinoboom. Allein die Ufa wird bis Dezember 1926 im Deutschen Reich einen Theaterpark von mehr als hundert Kinos mit rd. 100.000 Plätzen besitzen.

 In Berlin, Essen oder München entstehen Lichtspielpaläste für über zweitausend Zuschauer. 

Die Produktionsmaschinerie läuft auf Hochtouren. Fritz Lang stellt nach fünfzehnmonatiger Drehzeit sein Jahrhundertwerk Metropolis fertig (der im Januar 1927 Premiere feiert), Alfred Hitchcock betritt mit The Lodger die Bühne - seinem ‘ersten richtigen Film‘, wie er es nennt.

Überall verlassen innovative, zum Teil auch ästhetisch radikale Filme die Studios.

So in Japan A Page of Madness, einem Horrortrip durch das Innenleben einer psychiatrischen Anstalt. 

Aus der Sowjetunion kommen der Psychothriller Sühne und die spätexpressionistische Literaturverfilmung Der Mantel (nach Gogol). In Berlin feiert mit Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed der erste Scherenschnitt-Animationsfilm der Welt seine Premiere.

F.W. Murnau eröffnet mit einer wegweisenden Eröffnungssequenz in Sachen Tricktechnik seine geniale Faust Adaption. Erstmals wird mit G.W. Pabsts Geheimnisse einer Seele das Thema Psychoanalyse in einem Film behandelt.

All das präsentiert StummfilmLIVEFestival 2026 – und noch mehr: 

Timothy Brock kommt zur Eröffnung des Festivals mit seiner Neukomposition zu Buster Keatons The General live with Orchestrains Babylon (03.09. 19:30).

Das iranische Musiker-Duo Peyman Yazdanian (Piano) und Adib Rostami (Kamancheh & Tombak) begleiten den Dokumentarfilm Grass, in dem ein von Dürre bedrohter Volksstamm mit seinen Herden zu einer beschwerlichen, lebensgefährlichen Wanderung in fruchtbare Regionen aufbricht – ein brandaktuelles Thema (5.9. 19:30).

Last but not least: Mehr als 20 internationale Solokünstlerinnen und -künstler  werden die Vorstellungen des StummfilmLIVEFestival 2026 musikalisch begleiten – nicht zu vergessen die Mitglieder des Babylon-Orchesters. Ihnen allen sei herzlich gedankt.

Unserer besonderer Dank geht an Frederic Schladeur von Celluloid Heaven, der das StummfilmLIVEFestival bei der oft schwierigen Materialbeschaffung seit langem unterstützt und in diesem Jahr so viele exzellente digitale Kopien wie noch nie organisieren konnte, sei es aus Wien, San Francisco oder Tokyo, und sie auch noch mit Untertiteln versehen hat. Silent FilmLIVEFestival 2026 – One Hundred Years

The cinema year 1926 is one of the most successful and productive of the silent film era. More than two and a half billion Americans visit the cinemas, which corresponds to weekly visitor numbers of around 50 million. The situation is similar in Great Britain, where people frequent the newly created "Picture Palaces" two to three times a week. There is also an unprecedented cinema boom in Germany. By December 1926, Ufa alone will have a theatre park of more than a hundred cinemas with around 100,000 seats in the German Reich. In Berlin, Essen or Munich, movie theaters for up to three thousand spectators are being built. 

The production machinery is running at full speed. After fifteen months of shooting, Fritz Lang completes his masterpiece of the century  Metropolis (which premieres in January 1927), Alfred Hitchcock enters  the stage with The Lodger - his 'first real film', as he calls it.

Innovative, sometimes aesthetically radical films are leaving the studios everywhere. In Japan, for example, A Page of Madness, a horror trip through the inner workings of a psychiatric institution.  From the Soviet Union come the psychological thriller Sühne and the late expressionist literary adaptation Der Mantel (after Gogol). The Adventures of Prince Achmed,  the world's first silhouette animated film, celebrates its premiere in Berlin. F.W. Murnau opens his ingenious Faust adaptation with a groundbreaking opening sequence in terms of animation technique. G.W. Pabst's Secrets of a Soul is the first film  to  deal with the topic of psychoanalysis.
Silent filmLIVEFestival 2026 presents all this - and even more: 
Timothy Brock comes to Babylon for the opening of the festival with his new composition of Buster Keaton's The General (03.09. 19:30). The Iranian musician duo Peyman Yazdanian (piano) and Adib Rostami (Kamancheh & Tombak) accompany the documentary Grass, in which a tribe threatened by drought sets off with its herds on an arduous, life-threatening migration to fertile regions – a red-hot topic (5.9. 19:30). Giovanni Spinelli (guitar) will  accompany A Page of Madness Teinsouke Kinugasa together with a traditional Japanese narrator, Benshi Megumi Eda  (05.09. 23:59). Last but not least: More than 20 international solo artists will provide musical accompaniment to the performances of the silent film LIVEFestival 2026 – not to forget the members of the Babylon Orchestra. We would like to thank them all.

Das  ORCHESTER: Babylon Orchester Berlin wurde 2019 gegründet. Als einziges Kino seit dem Ende der Stummfilmära spielt im BABYLON nunmehr regelmäßig ein Kinoorchester, das es ermöglicht, die Kunstform der live begleiteten Filme wieder ebenso zu erleben wie Oper oder Konzert. Das Orchester hat den Anspruch, Stummfilmmusik auf höchstem, musikalischem Niveau und in meisterhafter Synchronität zum Film aufzu-führen, um den großartigen Werken der Stummfilmzeit und ihren Original- und Neu-vertonungen durch künstlerische Perfektion gerecht zu werden. Die Orchesterbeset-zung umfasst, je nach Film, 16–30 professionelle Musiker und Musikerinnen mit langjähriger Berufserfahrung in renommierten Orchestern.
