Das traditionsreiche Filminstitut ICAIC steht auf Grund des Energiemangels vor großen Herausforderungen: Wirtschaftliche Engpässe und landesweite Stromausfälle erschweren auch die Arbeit der Filmschaffenden erheblich. Schneiden, vertonen, projizieren – all das braucht Energie.
Energie, die oft fehlt. Der gemeinnützige Verein InterRed plant deshalb, auf dem Dach des ICAIC eine netzunabhängige Solaranlage zu errichten. Sie soll die wichtigsten technischen Bereiche mit sauberem, verlässlichem Strom versorgen - und so den Kulturbetrieb nachhaltig absichern.
Filmreihe „Soy Cuba“ im Babylon!
Der Revolutionsführer und charismatische Kommunikator Fidel Castro, Ikone und Feindbild, beliebt und gehasst, wäre im August dieses Jahres 100 Jahre alt geworden.
Der Ausnahmepolitiker hatte seine kleine karibische Insel auf die Bühne der Weltpolitik gehievt und stand jahrzehntelang für ein alternatives Gesellschaftsmodell in der westlichen Hemisphäre. Er symbolisierte damit den David, der Goliath in Washington herausforderte.
Grund genug, mit einer Filmreihe zum kubanischen Film zwischen Mai und August das Filmschaffen auf der Insel über die Jahrzehnte hinweg zu würdigen.
Castros Devise „innerhalb der Revolution alles, außerhalb der Revolution nichts“ wurde zur Richtschnur kubanischer Kulturpolitik. 1959 wurde das Filminstitut ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos) durch das erste Kulturgesetz der neuen Regierung ins Leben gerufen, dort hieß es programmatisch: „Film ist Kunst“.
Die Filmkunst beschäftigte sich immer wieder erstaunlich kritisch mit dem eigenen Land.
Der kubanisch-sowjetische Klassiker „Soy Cuba“ (Ich bin Cuba, 1964) von M. Kalatozov ist Namensgeber unserer Reihe, die wir am 2. Mai mit einem anderen Klassiker, „La Vida es silbar“ von Fernando Pérez starten werden.

“Soy Cuba” film series at Babylon!
Fidel Castro, the revolutionary leader and charismatic communicator – an icon and a bogeyman, both loved and hated – would have turned 100 this August.
This exceptional politician had propelled his small Caribbean island onto the world political stage and for decades stood for an alternative model of society in the Western Hemisphere. He thus symbolised David challenging Goliath in Washington.
Reason enough to pay tribute to filmmaking on the island over the decades with a series of Cuban films running from May to August.
Castro’s motto, “Everything within the revolution, nothing outside the revolution”, became the guiding principle of Cuban cultural policy. In 1959, the film institute ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos) was established by the new government’s first cultural law, which stated programmatically: “Film is art”.
Cuban cinema has repeatedly engaged with its own country in a remarkably critical manner.
The Cuban-Soviet classic “Soy Cuba” (I Am Cuba, 1964) by M. Kalatozov lends its name to our series, which we will launch on 2 May with another classic, “La Vida es silbar” by Fernando Pérez.

Castros Revolution war für viele Kubaner die Erlösung von einem tyrannischen Regime und der Beginn von wesentlich mehr Freiheit und sozialer Gerechtigkeit.
Sergio ist im Land geblieben, nicht aus Überzeugung, sondern aus Bequemlichkeit und ein bisschen Neugier. Seine Frau hat ihn und Kuba verlassen. Sergio versucht in seiner Luxuswohnung, seine Memoiren zu schreiben, sich zu erinnern an die alte Zeit, die neue zu analysieren und zu verstehen. Es gibt eine Reihe von herausragenden Klassikern von der Karibik-Insel, aber „Memorias del subdesarollo“ gehört zu den größten Filmen der Kinogeschichte überhaupt.

„I remember it as if it were yesterday. The film begins. A dizzying sound of drumbeats invades the movie theatre. Pulsating bodies take the screen. Dozens, hundreds of people, mostly blacks and mestizos, are dancing. Everything is movement and ecstasy. All of a sudden, gunshots ring out.
A man lies on the ground - a lifeless body. Surrounding him, the deafening music and the rhythm continue. The beat is frenzied. The camera travels from face to face in the crowd until it stops at a young black woman. The frame freezes on her trance-lit face. Thus begins Memorias del subdesarrollo, and watching it was like a shock to me. The film navigated between different states - fiction and documentary, past and present, Africa and Europe.
The dialectic narrative took the form of a collage, crafted with an uncommon conceptual and cinematographic rigor.” (Walter Salles) Director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea: “I remember that soon after the Revolution, everybody (and I mean everybody) thought that our island could be transformed, from one moment to the next, into a sort of Switzerland of the Caribbean. We had everything we needed: the people, the weapons, the enthusiasm, and the opportunity to re-build our country from scratch.
Only later did we understand that we were basically a farming country, that industrialization would take more time than we had hoped, and that our island was small, poor and underdeveloped. All of a sudden, everything that had once seemed within arm’s reach was further and further away.
The new reality is a radical one. We don’t just need a new economy, new politics, a new society. We need a new way of thinking, and this will take longer. For now, we have to accept who we are and keep fighting, which brings me back to the concept of underdevelopment, but this time, of a moral and aesthetic nature.” 1962.
