Ein Fehler in der Vergangenheit hat aus dem Geschäftsmann Titta di Girolamo (Toni Servillo) das gemacht, was er jetzt ist. Seit acht Jahren muss er alleine in einem Schweizer Hotel wohnen, ohne Kontakt zu seiner Familie haben zu können. Ein merkwürdiger Koffer voller Geld wird ihm vor das Hotelzimmer gestellt.

Titta di Girolamo nimmt den Koffer an sich und zahlt das Geld auf einer Bank ein. Ansonsten passiert in seinem Leben nichts. Er sitzt im Hotel und versucht die Zeit totzuschlagen. Die Barfrau Sofia (Olivia Magnani), die sich offenkundig für ihn zu interessieren scheint, lässt er links liegen. Denn sein Schicksal ist das der Isolation. Aber di Girolamo schafft es nicht, die quälende Routine weiter durchzuhalten. Er bricht den Kodex der Isolation und fängt an, sich mit Sofia zu unterhalten. Dadurch ändert sich sein Leben auf fundamentale Weise.

Toni Servillo stars in Sorrentino’s second feature, now as a mysterious, insomniac loner whose dark past has left him stranded in a lakeside Swiss hotel. Trapped in a numbed, luxurious amber, he maintains a rigorous daily routine seemingly void of pleasure while wryly observing others and waiting for something ominous and unnamed that he knows will soon upturn his world. Although he attempts to retain a cool detachment, Servillo’s man without qualities is gradually pulled into the spell of a bewitchingly young bartender who inspires an obsessional, unrequited love that tempts him to divulge his hidden identity. Sorrentino’s virtuosic storytelling talents are revealed in The Consequences of Love as it slyly transforms from existential meditation into fast-paced thriller, animated all the while by a precision framing and pace that expressively uses the space of the hotel, at times in almost Tati fashion, to diagnose the absurdity of Servillo’s condition. Titta Di Girolamo è un uomo di mezza età che da otto anni vive in un albergo di Lugano; soffre di insonnia, è separato da ormai dieci anni e ha tre figli a cui spesso telefona ma che non gli vogliono parlare. Gli unici contatti umani che ha sono quelli con il direttore dell'albergo, per pagare il conto rigorosamente ogni primo del mese, e con una coppia di anziani coniugi un tempo benestanti con i quali gioca a carte. Nessuno sa cosa faccia di lavoro, ma in realtà due volte a settimana deposita una valigia in una banca.
Questa sua vita, fatta di azioni rigidamente preordinate, comincia a scomporsi quando inizia a parlare con la giovane barista dell'albergo, Sofia....
