Als Reaktion auf die Anti-Wall-Street-Bewegung „Occupy Wall Street“ 2011 ereignete sich „Occupy Central“ in Hongkong. Tai Cho, ein Student, der sich der Bewegung mit seiner Freundin Yi anschloss, besetzte den öffentlichen Platz am HSBC (Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation) über ein Jahr lang. Yi wurde wegen eines Angriffs auf einen Polizisten festgenommen und Tai Cho verliebt sich anschließend in Yis Mutter Wan. Maxim ist Erbfolger eines Sojasoßenunternehmens, der ebenfalls an der Bewegung teilnimmt und erlebt dabei ein politisches Erwachen, der ihn zurück zu seinen Wurzeln führt. Seine Ex Freundin, namens Man ist eine Reporterin und in lokale Geschichten vernarrt, die dazu bestimmt sind zu verschwinden. Li Lei, eine junge Dame aus China, führt ein gewöhnliches Leben mit ihrem Freund Yin, als ihr Leben durch den mysteriösen Internetstar Ha Mai verändert wird. Sie alle sind gefangen in einer Orientierungslosigkeit bis es zum Ausbruch des Umbrella Movement („Regenschirmbewegung“) 2014 kam.
Pseudo Secular entstand durch eine Schwarmfinanzierung. Durch die Elemente einer Dokumentation kombiniert mit dem dramatischen Stil bildet der Film das Schicksal der Hongkong Menschen in turbulenten Zeiten ab.
Rita HUI ist eine Hongkong Videoartistin und Filmregisseurin. 1994 machte Hui ihren Abschluss im Department of Film & TV der Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts und erlangte 2005 ihren Master-Abschluss in Fine Arts an der Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Ihre Video-Werke und Filme wurden an zahlreichen internationalen Filmfestivals und Ausstellungen ausgestrahlt: Busan International Film Festival (New Currents und A Window on Asian Cinema sections), Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, South Taiwan Film Festival, Seoul Independent Film Festival, Hong Kong Independent Film Festival u.v.m. Andere Werke schließen Dead Slowly (2009) und Keening Woman (2013) mit ein.
EN: In response to ‘Occupy Wall Street’ in 2011, ‘Occupy Central’ occurred in Hong Kong. Tai Cho, a university student joins the movement with his girlfriend Yi, and occupies the public area at HSBC for nearly a year. Yi is jailed for attacking the police, and Tai Cho falls in love with Yi's mother, Wan. Maxim, an heir to a soy sauce fortune, takes part in the movement and experiences political awakening, leading him to return to his roots. His ex Man is a reporter obsessed with recording local history destined to disappear. Li Lei, a young woman from China, lives an unremarkable life with her boyfriend Yin in a tiny apartment until her life is changed by a mysterious internet celeb Ha Mai. They are stuck in their directionless lives until the outbreak of the 'Umbrella Movement' in 2014.
Pseudo Secular was made with crowdfunding. Combining documentary and dramatic styles, the film depicts the fate of Hong Kong people in turbulent times.
Rita HUI, Hong Kong video artist and film director. Hui graduated from the Department of Film & TV of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Art in 1996, and obtained her master degree of Fine Art in RMIT in 2005.
