Auf der Ilha de Moçambique existierten tief verwurzelte Traditionen des Landes lange in friedlicher Koexistenz mit Religionen wie dem Christentum und dem Islam. Aber inzwischen gefährden evangelikale Sekten und wahabistische Islamisten das multikulturelle Zusammenleben. Die Regisseurin Yara Costa illustriert dies am Beispiel der jungen Muslimin Karen. Sie erscheint einerseits als unabhängige Feministin, die für Gleichberechtigung einsteht und versucht, Probleme von Armut in ihrer Heimat zu lösen. Andererseits setzt sie sich jedoch für die Durchsetzung der Scharia ein.

BETWEEN GOD AND I gewährt intime Einblicke in das Leben der Protagonistin, das gespickt ist von Zweifeln und Widersprüchen bezüglich ihrer Identität. Yara Costa will damit verdeutlichen, was passiert, „wenn Fundamentalisten, egal welcher Richtung, in Bereiche eindringen, die der Staat vernachlässigt“.
