A Moment of Reflection: Updated Screening of the Documentary Orishas devotion in Berlin
On December 17, an updated version of the documentary Orishas devotion in Berlin will be screened. This film delves into the practice of candomblé and santería in Berlin, featuring Joaquín La Habana and Murah Soares, the high priest of the only candomblé house in Germany, located at Forum Brasil.
Originally, the documentary was commissioned by the former Werkstatt der Kulturen as a response to another production by rbb, which caused confusion and dissatisfaction within the candomblé (Brazilian) and santería (Cuban) communities in Berlin. Many felt that the earlier portrayal failed to accurately represent their traditions and beliefs.
The initial version of Orishas devotion in Berlin was widely praised by practitioners of both faiths. The documentary has been commended by figures such as Lorand Matory, Professor in the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Duke University, who described it as:
"A brilliantly creative revelation of the Black gods who dance on Hegel’s doorstep!"
Similarly, Bernd Pikert, editor at taz, remarked, "I discovered a Berlin I did not know."
This new edition delves deeper into Germany’s historical connections with Africa and provides a clearer explanation of the shared essence of both religions, centered on the practice of the Regla de Ocha, the foundational spiritual system of both traditions.
The screening will take place on December 17 at Babylon Cinema, a date of profound significance for Cubans as it coincides with the feast day of Saint Lazarus,(Babalu Aye in the Orishas) the most revered saint in Cuba. On this day, prayers are offered for health, well-being, and hope for individuals and the nation as a whole.
From Berlin, we will also extend our prayers for Cuba, a country currently facing very challenging times.
