Die beiden Genussmittel Kaffee und Zigaretten bilden den Aufhänger für elf lässige Episoden, die Regisseur Jim Jarmush zu einem Film zusammen geknüpft hat. Darin lässt Jarmush unter anderem einen Kellner (Steve Buscemi) über den angeblich existierenden bösen Zwillingsbruder von Elvis Presley berichten, treibt Joe Rigano und Vinny Vella in eine Diskussion darüber, ob Kaffee oder Zigaretten ungesünder sind, und präsentiert Cate Blanchett in einer Doppelrolle als sie selbst und ihre Cousine Shelly, die auf Cates Karriere neidisch ist.
Natürlich hat Jarmush auch seinen bereits 1993 entstandenen Kurzfilm mit Iggy Pop und Tom Waits integriert, die unter anderem über den Nutzen reden, das Rauchen aufzugeben, und die Qualität des Lokals bewerten, in dem sie sich befinden.

In 2003, director Jim Jarmusch presented his masterpiece "Coffee and Cigarettes" to the world, a film in which we are presented with a series of small, interconnected stories, all with the same theme: coffee and cigarettes.
Through the narration of these little stories, Jarmusch manages to masterfully portray the complexity of human relationships and the variety of situations we face in our daily lives. The film features a cast of renowned actors, such as Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Steve Buscemi, among others, who give life to characters thatalthough apparently very different from each other, share the same vulnerability and a same search for human connection.

The two stimulants coffee and cigarettes form the hook for eleven casual episodes that director Jim Jarmush has woven together into a film. Among other things, Jarmush has a waiter (Steve Buscemi) talk about Elvis Presley's allegedly existing evil twin brother, gets Joe Rigano and Vinny Vella into a discussion about whether coffee or cigarettes are unhealthier, and presents Cate Blanchett in a double role as herself and her cousin Shelly, who is jealous of Cate's career.
Of course, Jarmush has also incorporated his 1993 short with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits, who talk about the benefits of quitting smoking and rate the quality of the pub they're in, among other things.
