Ein unterirdischer Verbindungsgang bringt einen der Gründungsväter der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika in Misskredit.
Bei Ausgrabungsarbeiten am einstigen Amtssitz des ersten US-Präsidenten George Washington in Philadelphia fanden Archäologen einen verborgenen Tunnel, der offenbar dazu diente, die neun schwarzen Sklaven des Hausherrn ungesehen ins Präsidentenhaus hinein- und wieder herauszuschleusen.
Der geheime Zugang war nur ein paar Schritte von den repräsentativen Räumen entfernt, in denen der Präsident Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts seine politischen Gäste empfing.
»Wer den Hort der Freiheit betritt, muss buchstäblich durch die Hölle der Sklaverei hindurch - darin liegt die Heuchelei, aber auch die Wahrheit dieses Funds«, erklärt Michael Coard, Anwalt in Philadelphia.

An underground passageway casts a shadow on one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America.
During excavation work at the former official residence of the first U.S. President, George Washington, in Philadelphia, archaeologists discovered a hidden tunnel that apparently served to smuggle the homeowner’s nine Black slaves in and out of the presidential residence unseen.
The secret passage was just a few steps away from the state rooms where the president received his political guests in the late 18th century.
“Anyone who enters this bastion of freedom must literally pass through the hell of slavery—that is the hypocrisy, but also the truth, of this discovery,” explains Michael Coard, a lawyer in Philadelphia.
