Indonesia, 1927, toward the end of the Dutch colonial era. A young and beautiful woman lives with her old and ailing Dutch husband. She lost her own name and now goes by Nyai, which means ‘concubine of a foreigner.’ She has to look after all the visitors who have come to celebrate her husband’s birthday and discuss how to manage his lands while both the locals and his family are trying to seize her husband’s wealth and privileges.
