PURE ROARING TWENTIES
Berlin is young in 1929 and four young people spend an erotic weekend adventure at Nikolassee.
Even before their Hollywood careers, the qualities of Billy Wilder, Robert Siodmak and Fred Zinnemann shine through: ironic intertitles, unusual camera angles and nouvelle vague long before it emerged as a genre.
With its straightforward, semi-documentary style, the film is one of the outstanding examples of the cinematic “New Objectivity”, a kind of early “nouvelle vague”.
Based on a script by Billie Wilder, this collaborative work tells the story of a clique of young Berliners who go on a Sunday trip to Lake Nicolassee, laugh, swim, argue a little and make up again. And in the evening they return home.
