Chaplins erste Produktion für sein gemeinsam mit Mary Pickford und Douglas Fairbanks gegründetes Studio United Artists wurde von der Kritik gefeiert, vom Publikum aber geschnitten, weil Chaplin es diesmal nicht zum Lachen brachte.

After countless slapstick comedies, Chaplin tried his hand at a new genre with this feature-length melodrama: it tells the story of a young couple in love who want to escape from the confines of provincial France to Paris. After an unforeseen event causes them to miss each other at the train station, their lives take a completely different turn.

Chaplin's first production for his studio United Artists, founded together with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, was critically acclaimed but cut by the audience because Chaplin did not make them laugh this time.
