26. APRIL - 05. Mai

95 Jahre BABYLON
On 11 April 1929, the BABYLON opened its doors as a silent film cinema.
We celebrate our 95th Birthday and Charlie Chaplin 135th with a great festival with the best comedies of the silent film era!

16th of APRIL 1889 -16th of APRIL 1989 The mayor of Los Angeles declared "THE CHARLIE CHAPLIN DAY"

Neil Brand, demon pianist and Slapstick connoisseur introduces the greatest silent comedies, from the superstars Chaplin, Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy and Ernst Lubitsch, to the lesser-known but equally great practitioners like Charley Chase, Raymond Griffith, Mabel Normand, Charlie Bowers, Max Linder and Monty Banks.

Spanning a decade and a half of silent laughter, with features, shorts and thrills combined with hilarity, this is the pick of the greatest silent comedies ever made, accompanied by some of the world's best accompanists including Babylon's own Anna Vavilkina, Meg Morley from London, Daan van den Hurk from Amsterdam and Neil himself.

The classic features of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd like The General, Steamboat Bill Jnr, Speedy, The Freshman and For Heavens Sake will be accompanied by our crack team of pianists and organists, while some of Chaplin and Lubitsch's great feature comedies will have full orchestral accompaniment.

Silent comedy with live music has to be experienced, it is pure joy seeing comedy greats of a century ago make us laugh so much we forget our troubles.

This is the perfect place to discover the golden moments of silent clowning, and even experts will find much they haven't seen before, with many new restorations and undiscovered masterpieces in the festival.

A tonic in these troubled times.
