Die Geschichte von Kriegen und Teilungen hat die Menschen in der Grenzregion geprägt, aber auch ein Strom, der durch das Land fließt: die Memel, auf litauisch Nemunas. Besonders der Schriftsteller Sudermann und der Dichter Bobrowski beschrieben das enge Verhältnis der Menschen dort mit der sie umgebenen Landschaft und Natur. Diese nennen ihre Gegend auch "Klein-Litauen". Sie erzählen von ihrem Leben, vom Ende des Krieges und der Zeit, in der Litauen zur Sowjetunion gehörte, und von der Gegenwart. Und sie berichten von der einzigartigen Natur, die sie umgibt, am Strom und am Haff.
Wohl kein deutscher Dokumentarfilmer hat sich in seinem Filmen so intensiv mit seinen persönlichen Wurzeln beschäftigt wie Volker Koepp. Selbst im westlichen Hinterpommern geboren, porträtierte er zuvor die Regionen "Pommerland" (2005) und "Schattenland" (2006). Und bereits 2001 entstand "Kurische Nehrung" vor allem im Königsberger Gebiet, der russischen Exklave, die heute von Polen und Litauen umgeben ist. 2008 reiste Koepp mit seinem Kameramann Thomas Plenert erneut in die Niederungslandschaften der Memel, die früher "PreußischLitauen" genannt wurden. Und wieder kehrte er mit wunderbaren Landschaftsbildern und Porträts und Erzählungen der heutigen Bewohner zurück.

The history of wars and divisions has shaped the people in the border region, but also a river that flows through the country: the Memel, or Nemunas in Lithuanian. The writer Sudermann and the poet Bobrowski in particular described the close relationship between the people there and the surrounding landscape and nature. They also call their region "Little Lithuania". They talk about their lives, about the end of the war and the time when Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union, and about the present. And they talk about the unique nature that surrounds them, by the river and the lagoon.
Probably no other German documentary filmmaker has explored his personal roots as intensively in his films as Volker Koepp. Born in the western part of Pomerania himself, he previously portrayed the regions of "Pommerland" (2005) and "Schattenland" (2006). And as early as 2001, he made "Curonian Spit", mainly in the Königsberg region, the Russian exclave that is now surrounded by Poland and Lithuania. In 2008, Koepp traveled again with his cameraman Thomas Plenert to the lowlands of the Memel, which used to be called "Prussian Lithuania". And once again he returned with wonderful landscape images and portraits and stories of today's inhabitants.
