On May 12, 2008, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck Wenchuan, Sichuan province. Over 5,000 students in primary and secondary schools perished in the disaster. In the aftermath, Chinese authorities suppressed information regarding the number of student deaths. In reaction to the government's lack of transparency, Ai Weiwei initiated a ‘Citizens’ Investigation’ to recover the names of the students who lost their lives. As of September 2, 2009, there were 4,851 confirmed names. 4851 is a tribute to the deceased students and a memorial for innocent lives lost.
