Momo zieht eher unfreiwillig mit ihrer Mutter von der Großstadt Tokyo ins Familienanwesen auf der Insel Shio. Ihre Gedanken drehen sich um den letzten Brief ihres verstorbenen Vaters. Warum steht dort nur „Liebe Momo“ und mehr nicht?
Als Momo eines Tages auf dem Dachboden ein altes Buch über Goblins und Yokais entdeckt, geschehen plötzlich seltsame und übernatürliche Dinge: So entdeckt Momo drei schelmische Yokai-Geister, die nur sie sehen kann und die damit beauftragt wurden, sie zu beschützen.
Die unersättlichen Yokais Iwa, Kawa und Mame stellen die sonst so ruhige Insel schnell auf den Kopf und plündern Speisekammern und Obstplantagen. Doch die kauzigen Weggefährten haben auch eine ernstere Seite und es scheint, als wären sie der Schlüssel zum Rätsel um den unvollendeten Brief ihres verstorben Vaters …

EN: After the loss of her father, young Momo moves to the family house on a remote island. Not too fond of her new habitat, Momo is also feeling uneasy about an unfinished letter her father left behind with only two words: “Dear Momo.”
Then, exploring the attic of her new house, she finds an antique book. And from that moment, strange happenings start occurring all around her...
Born in 1966, Okiura started his career at the age of 16 with no academic background. His credits as animator include some of the most visually stunning animated feature films produced in Japan: Akira (1988, key animator), Patlabor: The Movie (1989, key animator), Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993, additional animation supervisor), Memories (1995, key animator), Ghost in the Shell (1995, character design, animation supervisor, layout artist), Cowboy Bebob The Movie: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (2001, opening credit sequence director and key animator) and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004, character designer, animation supervisor).
Okiura made his feature film directorial debut in 1999 with Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, based on the script by Mamoru Oshii. A Letter to Momo is his second directorial effort, and has won many prizes around the world.
