BERLATIN Screenings: LA SUPREMA[OmeU] Colombia, 2023, R: Felipe Holguín Caro, 83 min. "A heart-warming ode to community solidarity."
Variety In a remote Colombian village without electricity, a strong-willed teenager convinces her whole town to find a way of watching her estranged uncle compete in a world championship boxing match.
Set in 2001 Colombia, this beautiful story takes us to La Suprema, a remote village in the Caribbean far from beaches and seemingly untouched by time. Strong-willed teenager Laureana (Elizabeth Martínez) refuses to conform to societal expectations.
When she learns her estranged uncle is about to fight in a world boxing championship in Venezuela, she rallies the entire village to watch the match on national TV.
Director Felipe Holguín Caro's moving film captures the vibrancy of the towns inner life; the musicality of daily talk and chores being done by the river, time spent playing dominoes, and just kids being kids. Much more than a setting or background, La Suprema and its inhabitants embody the endearing and enduring qualities of collective effort, joys, and pain.
LA SUPREMA arrives at its Berlin premiere following an impressive global festival run.
After debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film captured the Audience Award at Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival, and secured Official Selections at Havana, Miami, and numerous other prestigious festivals.
BERLATIN Screenings are organized by LATIN QUARTER Film Distribution in partnership with Babylon.
