Der ideologiefeste Soziologiestudent David (Vladimir Cruz) und der nonkonformistische Künstler Diego (Jorge Perugorría) treffen in Havannas berühmter Eisdiele „Coppelia“ aufeinander; eine Unterhaltung entspinnt sich. Diego ergreift die Initiative und lädt David in seine Wohnung ein. Dieser erkennt die Absicht und ist verstimmt: Mit einer „Schwuchtel“ will er nichts zu tun haben.
Von einem „linientreuen“ Studienkollegen ermuntert, besucht er Diego schließlich doch, um ihn zu „observieren“. Doch der politische Auftrag scheitert, als sich beide nach und nach anfreunden. David merkt, dass er nun so manches anders sieht; Diego macht Pläne. Die Situation wird immer komplizierter…
Der Film gewann den Silbernen Bären auf der Berlinale 1994, hätte fast den Auslands Oscar erhalten und war der international erfolgreichste kubanische Film.

David (Vladimir Cruz), a sociology student with strong ideological convictions, and Diego (Jorge Perugorría), a nonconformist artist, meet at Havana’s famous “Coppelia” ice cream parlor; a conversation ensues. Diego takes the initiative and invites David to his apartment. David recognizes his intentions and is put off: he wants nothing to do with a “faggot.”
Encouraged by a “party-line” classmate, he eventually visits Diego after all, to “observe” him. But the political mission fails as the two gradually become friends. David realizes that he now sees many things differently; Diego makes plans. The situation becomes increasingly complicated…

David (Vladimir Cruz) es un joven miembro del partido comunista cubano. Su novia acaba de dejarle. Está desencantado y aspira a convertirse en escritor. Un día conoce a Diego (Jorge Perugorría), un joven homosexual, culto, vitalista y crítico con el sistema. Diego se siente atraído por el estudiante. Con el propósito de mantener relaciones sexuales, lleva a su casa a David bajo el pretexto de prestarle unos libros prohibidos. David, al percatarse de las intenciones del artista, las rechaza y se marcha del edificio pero, pasados unos días, decide mantener el contacto pensando que conviene vigilar a Diego como elemento peligroso....
