Ein Episodenfilm über einige der Bewohner Roms, die es an einem besonders heißen Sonntag raus ans Meer zieht, obwohl die Straßen verstopft und die Busse vollkommen überfüllt sind.

The Ostia beach, on a typical Sunday in August. People from different social backgrounds head to the beach to escape the city heat. Over the course of the day, everyone's destinies unfold [...].
It is the first film of the “beach” genre, which was then revisited (perhaps too often) in the 1960s.

But there is much more to it than that: the tones of neorealism are still vigorous and credible, and the pace of the story is extraordinarily balanced.

Worth noting is the performance of Marcello Mastroianni and  Emilio Cigoli, the great voice actor, in the role of the affectionate father.
