Nachdem ihre Eltern gestorben sind kommt Celestina, eine junge Frau vom Land nach Rom, um dort als Dienstmädchen zu arbeiten.

Ihre beiden Brüder wandern nach Australien aus um dort ein Auskommen zu finden – damit ist Celestina ganz auf sich allein gestellt. Sie lernt einen Mann kennen, der sich aber als unverlässlich erweist, und findet schließlich in der solidarischen Gemeinschaft von gleichgestellten jungen Frauen einen Rückhalt.
