Thi and Trung live in the gorgeous, rice-terraced mountains of Vietnam’s far northwest. Like many young men in this region on the main heroin route from Laos to China, they’re addicts, and they have HIV. Thi wants to kick his habit. Trung just wants to die. “With or Without Me ” is an intimate, tragicomic portrayal of two guys strung out at the edge of the map in a Communist country struggling with drug use, and of the wives, family, doctors and friends trying to pull them back from the brink.

Bộ phim tài liệu chân thực về cuộc sống của Lả và Thi, một cặp vợ chồng trẻ nghiện ma túy ở Điện Biên. Nơi họ sống nằm trên tuyến đường luân chuyển thuốc phiện chính từ Lào sang Trung Quốc. Chiếc máy quay trở thành một phần cuộc sống của họ, họ chia sẻ về những ước mơ và hoài bão đã bị chôn vùi. Bộ phim cũng vén bức màn về câu chuyện sử dụng thuốc phiện ở Việt Nam với hi vọng đóng góp một phần nào trong việc tìm ra hướng giải quyết tốt nhất cho vấn đề vẫn vẫn đang gây tranh cãi này. Phim đạt giải Planète Rouge 2011 tại LHP Quốc tế Marseille và LHP Torino 2011.

Directors: Trần Phương Thảo is a Producer & Director. She directed "Workers Dream", which attended many international festivals and was awarded at Cinéma du Réel 2007 (P. Perrault Award). She supervises Varan Vietnam production company and is the head teacher in Varan Vietnam’s workshops. Swann Dubus worked as a DoP, editor, and director of several documentary features in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Together, their films explore major themes of Vietnamese society from a personal angle.
