Štefan Pongo is a Roma lorry driver. Fifteen years ago, he emigrated from the Czech Republic to the UK with his family to shield them from the open racial discrimination there. The children have since graduated from university and the family is doing well. Mission complete. But hateful sentiments from the old country continue to have an impact.
When the Czech president claims that the Roma are work-shy, an angry Štefan asks other Roma to send him photographs on social media of them at work. Štefan receives thousands of photos and becomes a well-known media figure.
He starts producing video blogs, organizes anti-racism demonstrations and provides humanitarian aid to Roma settlements in need. All this comes at the cost of time spent with his family. Štefan’s spirited wife, Iveta, has had enough.
Will this prominent Roma lorry driver be able to restore some harmony back into his life? The documentary film “Pongo Calling” is a story of activism, resistance and love in today's Europe.

Štefan Pongo ist Rom und LKW-Fahrer. Vor 15 Jahren wandert Štefan aus Tschechien nach Großbritannien aus, um seine Familie vor rassistischer Diskriminierung zu schützen. Die Kinder haben inzwischen ihren Universitätsabschluss gemacht und der Familie geht es gut. Mission erfüllt. Aber die hasserfüllten Gefühle aus der alten Heimat wirken weiter nach.
Als der tschechische Präsident behauptet, die Roma* seien arbeitsscheu, bittet ein wütender Štefan andere Roma*, ihm in den sozialen Medien Fotos von ihnen bei der Arbeit zu schicken. Štefan erhält Tausende und wird zu einer bekannten Medienfigur.
Er beginnt mit der Produktion von Videoblogs, organisiert Anti-Rassismus-Demonstrationen und leistet humanitäre Hilfe für Roma*-Siedlungen in Not. Doch wie viel Zeit bleibt da noch für die Familie?
Wird es dem prominenten Roma*-Lkw-Fahrer gelingen, wieder Harmonie in sein Leben zu bringen? Der Dokumentarfilm „Pongo Calling“ erzählt von Aktivismus, Widerständigkeit und der Liebe im heutigen Europa.
