Torino @ Berlino: Un natale a casa croce [OmeU] IT, 2024, R: Pupi Avanti mit Paolo Spezzaferri, Teresa Cerciello, Chiara Barassi, 75 Min

A documentary that recounts the life of Benedetto Croce, the Italian philosopher and senator, and one of the major intellectuals of his era. After the earthquake in Ischia in 1883, in which his parents and his sister died, Benedetto grew up with a passion for philosophy and literature, and learned to transform his pain into determination. His friendship with Giovanni Gentile, the other great intellectual of the period, was fundamental to him. Their friendship lasted from 1896 until the late 1920s, when Croce, who had initially espoused fascism, became an opponent of the regime, whereas Gentile remained one of its foremost supporters. When Croce learned that his friend has been killed, on April 15, 1944, he was deeply struck; after the Liberation, he joined the national unity government, only to be attacked by the Italian Communist Party for his initial support of fascism. Croces life, thus, was intertwined with the most significant events of Italian history, becoming a reflection of its conflicts and ideological tensions.
